Facebook announces change to security

30/8/2011

It has been quite a week with Facebook announcing changes to it's security, here is a link from an article in the Sydney Morning Herald  and here is a link to a website which explains some of the features of the changes.

I sure picked the wrong time to start talking about this as my knowledge is already "so yesterday!" tut tut!!  All in all the world is changing and privacy as we know it is going to change.  The dilemma is where to abstain from doing anything online and miss out but be confident that your Privacy is protected or understand your privacy settings on anything you subscribe to - I know what I am going to do!!

Hopefully you are all familiar with your profiles on Facebook and if you had not joined Facebook before this blog, you are tempted to do so now.  If you want to join and need a friend to practice on, please feel free to have me as your first friend.  Go on, I promise it is lots of fun.

Facebook privacy settings - what does it all mean?

Most "baby boomers" I speak to do not have a Facebook page because they know someone who knows someone who had a relative who had their identity stolen using the information on Facebook!  Sound familiar - I make light of a very serious matter, online identity theft is a scarey and very real issue. In a 12 month period between 2009/2010 half a million Australians were were victims of identity fraud.  You may have heard of a term called Phishing which is where dodgy people send you emails and links pretending to be reputable (like your bank) and you unknowingly give them information that then enables them to make fraudulent transactions using your details.  Social Media is a new source of information, by its very nature we share a lot of personal information coupled with information from our profiles it makes it easy for anyone with dishonest intentions.

SO ....... this makes privacy settings on Facebook very important, below is some information on how to access the privacy settings and what they mean.  I hope that this helps..

RSS - What does the orange radio active looking symbol mean or do?

RSS is a tool that checks for website/blog/forum updates automatically and then lets you know the changes.  My mum always said that if there was a shortcut or an easier way of doing something - I would find it.  This is the easy way to find out when I have updated my blog or any website that you often refer to is updated.

So the first exercise is to subscribe to the RSS feed in the right hand column, follow the prompts to set up your feed.  By looking at the settings you can change the frequency which it looks up the site, most applications I looked at had a default of 1 day.

I am using Internet Explorer, so when I have a few minutes I will click on the "radio active" looking button and see any updates to the websites/blogs/forums I have subscribed to.

Have a go - I dare you!!!

Hi, I am on a mission to become a "late adopter" of social media.  Being a baby boomer, I thought it would be useful to share some of my discoveries, frustration and excitement in my social media adventure.

I am currently a facebooker, although a shy one, at that!  I read and spy on people more than I contribute, but that is going to change over the next few months.  I am getting hooked on it and love hearing about friends and family on a daily basis, but I do wonder if all this facebooking is steering us away from having the old fashioned conversation?  My husband broke his wrist playing soccer a few weeks ago, a year ago I would have had to phone several people and everyone else would have had to find our via the grape vine.  I put it on facebook and the sympathy and well wishes have rolled in - how great is that.

I also think that it is a very useful tool, when travellers go away, you feel so close as they post their photos and whereabouts - information that you would not normally get in detail until they returned.

BUT, do we put information on facebook that we would or should tell people in person?  How much information can people learn about you from facebook? Not sure - the jury is still out!
